Following on from our enthralling 6-4 win against South Liverpool from Saturday, we played out another cracker tonight at Gigg Lane against Bury resulting in a 4-3 victory as we progress to the third round of the Macron Challenge Cup.
We struggled to get a hold of the ball in the opening stages, however there were positive. Jacob Ngoy whipping in an incredibly inviting cross that was met by Lewis Byrne in the box whose header flashed just over the bar. Bury found themselves through on goal twice but our captain Jordan Schofield pulled off two incredible last-ditch interceptions kept the game goalless.
We went onto take the lead in the nineteenth minute with a fantastic chip shot from Lewis-Simon Byrne from an incredibly tight angle. Following on from this goal we went onto control possession much more, playing some very positive stuff.
Against the run of play, we give the ball away cheaply on the edge of the box, resulting in a shot from the edge of the box that beat Morgan Bacon, making it 1-1.
We were greeted by snow at half time, leading to a shaky start from us, conceding two goals in the space of the first ten minutes, as elimination began to look like a strong possibility.
However, it was a stroke of tactical brilliance from our managers Carl & Ben that really changed the game, introducing Rob Worrall and Wisdom Bernard who had an immediate impact upon the game. Rob added a new dynamic to the game, confident on the ball spraying it out wide, getting us in very promising positions.
The other substitution, Wisdom Bernard reduced the margin to just one goal after poking it past the keeper.
We would go onto not only level the game, but go onto find a winner, Matt Barlow with an impressive hit from outside the box, finding the bottom corner to put level and substitute Robert Flynn winning the game when he received the ball after a menacing charge down the right-hand side.
An incredible comeback win means we progress to the third round of the Macron Challenge cup and much praise needs to go to the coaching team who’s substitutions completely changed the game after we had fallen behind.
