MATCH REPORT: Chaddy fall to away defeat despite Bacon penalty heroics

Written by Jacob Jones.

A resilient performance by the boys was unfortunately not enough tonight as we travel back from St. Helens with nothing to show for it.

The hosts scored the game’s only goal early in the second half when a dangerous lofted cross into the box found Thomas Scarborough who headed home past Morgan Bacon to put Helens ahead

Helens were awarded a penalty only three minutes after taking the lead when Morgan Bacon was second to the ball, taking out Thomas Scarborough who was once again involved for the home side.

Morgan, who was our penalty shootout hero a few weeks ago against Bury and he was at it again tonight, saving Jack Ball’s penalty and keeping us in the game.

The two teams remained goalless heading into half-time. St. Helens goalkeeper Joe Mason had a crucial role to play in that however, pulling off two brilliant saves from Tyler Berry’s point-blank effort as well as a one-on-one face off with Lewis-Simon Byrne.

Mason’s form continued into the second half as he once again denied us from equalising from another one-on-one opportunity, this time the chance falling to Tyler Berry.

We continued to push as the half progressed, coming agonisingly close in the late stages of the game when Ethan Sutcliffe pulled the ball back to Lewis-Simon Byrne who miscued his shot and saw it bobble up into the air.

Frustrations continued into the 96th minute as Jack Kenny saw his header drift just inches past the post in the closing stages of the game.

Unfortunately, this would prove to be our last opportunity of tonight’s game with the referee blowing his full-time whistle shortly after, confirming an away defeat.

Assistant manager, Mark Cook told us “Overall, I think we were worth a point, if not we could have even gone away with all three points,” describing it as a “frustrating night for the team”

However, there is no time for us to dwell on tonight’s defeat with our attention needing to be immediately shifted to Monday’s fixture away at Stockport Town.
