We made it back-to-back wins after an impressive 2-1 win against promotion contenders, Ramsbottom United, who came into the match having won their previous six clashes.
We set the tone quite early in the game with a strong start, looking positive in the opening moments of the game. A big chance came the way of Nicholas Hepple, as Adam Dale’s ball found him; Hepple’s shot was saved by da Silva Mendes in the Ramsbottom goal.
As the half progressed, we began to see what we expected from a side with Ramsbottom’s quality as our opponents began to grow into the game and put us under increased, sustained periods of pressure - forcing us to remain disciplined and tight at the back.
However, it would be us that would open the scoring. An excellent finish from Tyler Berry, showing great composure to tuck the ball into the bottom left corner to put us ahead at the Vestacare Stadium.
This lead would be taken into the half-time interval, but not without a slight scare before the referee’s whistle. Walker struck the ball well for our opponents and as his effort rifle off of our crossbar.
The visitors started the second half well, applying the pressure as we expected. This pressure would eventually lead to them getting back on level terms just before the hour mark via a thunderous volley from the edge of the box by Heyhurst.
Character is ever important in this sport, and we would go onto show that we have this in bucket loads. James Purfield put us back in front on the back of some brilliant work by Hepple, who danced around the Rams’ defenders before setting Jimmy up and increasing his goal tally for the season.
We were then able to see out the rest of the game despite some late pressure from our opponents, with Walker once again seeing one of his efforts hitting the crossbar.
We look to take momentum from this win into our final game of the season against Litherland on Friday. This will be our final game at the Vestacare Stadium.
